It's easy to confuse Montepulciano and Montalcino. Both towns are in southern Tuscany, just south of the Chianti Classico zone and separated by about 15 miles. Both Vino Nobile (Montepulciano) and Brunello (Montalcino) are very highly regarded in Italy; in fact both were among the first five regions to be awarded DOCG status. But in the US, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is almost unknown while Brunello di Montalcino is famous! The two wines are similar in style and quality. Because they are less well known, Vino Nobiles are much better values. Brothers Leonardo and Simone organically farm seven hectares of the Prugnolo Gentile clone of Sangiovese in the hamlet of Caggiole. Simone is passionate about his work. His efforts show in this magnificent wine. Aged 24 months in neutral barrels, it is very classy and a great value − perhaps a little lighter, but more refined than Brunellos selling for $10 more.
